POSITION OPENING
Watauga County is accepting applications for the position of EMS Administrative Assistant/Billing Specialist with Emergency Medical Services. Position responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clerical tasks related to the Watauga County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division. Duties include maintaining and organization of EMS records, including data files and statistical performance metrics; review and update of Protocol Manuals, state-mandated documents, and ensuring scheduled revisions are completed; and scheduling clinical rotations for students and coordination of ambulance/event staffing. Position will prepare clear billing procedure documentation and distribute to EMS field crews and vendors; audit patient care reports for completeness and flag documentation or coding issues; serve as a liaison—explain and clarify billing procedures, answer related inquiries from EMS staff, insurance providers, and vendors; and monitor claim submission workflows, communicate procedural updates, and coordinate follow up actions. Additional duties include preparation of non-financial reports on EMS service data, documentation deficiencies, and procedural adherence for department review; support of budget preparation and assist in tracking departmental expenditures and reimbursements; preparation of correspondence, meeting agendas, minutes, and routine reports for the EMS Advisory Board; and providing front-line administrative support—answer phones, respond to public inquiries, manage mail, and maintain office systems. Position will serve as the EMS Division’s Privacy Officer—train staff on PHI protocols, manage confidentiality procedures, and process external records requests.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma or GED; associate’s degree in office administration, medical office administration, EMS administration, or a related field required. Candidates with two (2) to three (3) years of clerical or administrative experience, especially within EMS, healthcare or public safety will be given priority.
