FAQ's

  • WHAT IF I NEED TO GET AN ADDRESS ASSIGNED TO GET PHONE SERVICE AT A BARN, JOBSITE WITHOUT AN EXISTING STRUCTURE, ETC.?

To discuss your particular situation, please call the E911 Addresser at (828) 265-5708.

  • HOW DO I GET A 911 ADDRESS ASSIGNED?

Addresses will be assigned to new structures automatically after a building permit has been issued, a driveway has been established, AND after the rough-in inspection. After the rough-in inspection your permit is automatically forwarded to this department with a request for a new address to be assigned. After an onsite inspection a new address is assigned, and an address notification letter is mailed to the owner at the mailing address on the building permit.

Addresses are not assigned to vacant parcels.

This office assigns addresses in all unincorporated portions of Watauga County, in the ETJ of the town of Boone, within the town limits of Blowing Rock (including that part in Caldwell county), and in the town of Seven Devils on the Watauga County side.

  • WHAT IF I NEED TO GET A CONSTRUCTION PHONE BEFORE THE ROUGH-IN INSPECTION?

An address will be required by the phone company for any kind of phone service they provide since you will have the capability of dialing 911. As long as the PERMANENT driveway is designated either on the site drawing, by being staked or flagged, or by being stubbed in, a 911 address can be assigned.

PLEASE NOTE: Should the driveway be moved significantly after the assignment of the address, a new address designating the correct placement on the access road may have to be assigned.

  • WHAT IF MY BUILDERS RISK INSURANCE COMPANY, MOBILE HOME OR MODULAR COMPANY, ETC., IS REQUIRING AN ADDRESS, AND I DON’T KNOW WHERE MY DRIVEWAY WILL BE YET AND DON’T HAVE A BUILDING PERMIT?

The addressing office will work with you to determine if a valid address can be assigned. If you are building on land that has a lot number, you can use the lot number and the street name off of which the driveway will be located.

PLEASE NOTE: “Temporary” addresses will not be assigned. Past experience has taught us that these kinds of addresses may not correctly identify the location of your driveway and tend to get into paperwork and cause more confusion as you try to close on your new home.

Please call the E911 Addresser at (828) 265-5708 to discuss your particular situation.

  • DO I HAVE TO HAVE A 911 ADDRESS TO GET A TEMPORARY POWER POLE FROM THE ELECTRIC COMPANY? THEIR PAPERWORK ASKS FOR AN ADDRESS.

This office works closely with all utility companies. A 911 address is not required to get a temporary power pole.

  • HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH THE HOUSE NUMBERS?

Please see information “Property Numbering System for Watauga County, NC” on this site.
