Watauga County Transfer Station

Disposition of Materials

Only bagged household trash is to be put in the dumpsters at the containter sites. All other materials must be brought up to the scalehouse and weighed before they are dumped.

Watauga County Transfer Station accepts all types of materials EXCEPT the following:
  • Liquids, including paint, oil and insecticides
  • Hazardous waste
  • Toxic waste
  • Gas tanks
Materials brought to the landfill must be divided according to where they are to be placed. The categories, and what can go in each, are:

Demolition - $45.00/ton
Brick, block, masonry, uncontaminated dirt, weeds, hardened concrete or cement

Metal/White Goods - $45.00/ton (white goods - no charge)
Non-food-related scrap metal, including sheet metal, lawn mowers, major appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators, water heaters, dishwashers, freezers), bicycles, empty water tanks (must have a hole at least 12 inches in diameter cut in one end). Metal banding, fence materials, and wire do not go in the metal pile.

Brush - $35.00/ton
All brush: wood that is all of these: untreated, unpainted, unstained, unvarnished, no particle board or plywood; leaves (not to be left in bags); pallets; wooden cable spools. These items can contain nails; they must not contain chemicals.

Carcasses
The Watauga County Transfer Station accepts animal carcasses for burial. The staff needs to be notified when you bring them in. There is a fee of $5.00 for anything under 100 pounds, $25.00 for anything over 100 pounds.

Tires - no charge
Tires can be dumped with the rims in them; they must be neatly stacked in the trailer provided for their disposal.

Solid Waste - $45.00/ton
Everything that does not fit one of the above categories (except, of course, for the items we do not accept at all). In the area where solid waste is dumped, there are special areas for recyclable materials and for batteries.
