Watauga County Parks and Recreation

How do you get to the Watauga County Parks and Recreation offices and Swim Complex?

Office is located off State Farm Road at 231 Complex Drive. Please call our office at 828-264-9511 for specific directions from your location. Contact the Swim Complex at 828-264-0270.
Where can I pick up registration forms?

Forms are avalaible at the Watauga County Parks and Recreation office, the Boone Mall, Boone Pediatrics, Northwest Children's Clinic and the Watauga County Library. All forms must be mailed to or hand delivered to the Watauga County Parks and Recreation office by the particular registration deadline date.
Adult Athletics
How do I sign up for an adult athletic team?

The registration forms must be turned in a the Watauga County Parks and Recreation office. Most adult league athletics are compomised of teams, which is how they register. The registration fees range from $200.00-$465.00.
Appalcart Stop
Is there an Appalcart stop near your location, where is it located, and what times are offered?

The Appalcart runs on the corner of Hunting Hills and Complex Drive every hour under the Red Appalcart.
Arts and Crafts
What type of arts and crafts do you offer?

We offer seasonal art and craft workshops for children, senior citizens, and special populations. These range from easy hour-long activities to difficult day-long projects.
Children's Programs
What programs do you have for children?

Athletic Programs: 3rd & 4th and 5th & 6th football, soccer, 7-15 yr. tennis , 5th/6th basketball, baseball, 8-16 yr. softball, dance/ballet, & swimming. Children's Camps: Spring Training Camp, Summer Adventure Day Camp, and Fun in the Sun. Arts: Programs for special populations like Friday Night Live (dancing), Special Olympics, very Special Arts Festival, cultural programs and art workshops.
Coaching
How do I sign up to be a coach?

Call and speak to Reggie Perry, Stephen Poulos, or Holly Goodwin. They each provide athletic programs and are always in need of coaches. 828-264-9511.
Conflicts with sports and swimming lessons
Is there a conflict with playing sports such as T-ball and having swim lessons?

Yes there is. However, the swim lessons only last 2 weeks. The participants would only miss 4-5 days worth of practices and/or games.

What facilities and/or equipment can be reserved by the public?

Jobs
How do I apply for a job?

The Recreation Office and Swim Complex have job applications available year-round. Just come by the office or complex and fill one out with a driver's license and official social security card.
Lifeguard
How do I become a life guard?

The Swim Complex takes applications year-round if one is already a lifeguard. However those interested in becoming a lifeguard need to call the pool at 828-264-0270 for additional information.
Lifeguard-training classes
When do you offer lifeguard-training classes?

They are offered seasonal. Spring is a definite time when classes are going on and sometimes Fall is another time. The classes are 36 hours long which are expanded across a certain number of days. Other times offered are based on demand.
Locations
Where is the Recreation Office and Swim Complex located?

The Recreation Office and Swim Complex are located right off State Farm near the Fire Department. You would turn off of State Farm onto Hunting Hills. You will take the first left onto Complex Drive. The building to the imediate left is the Swim Complex. The road will lead you into a large parking lot. The Recreation Office, which is yellow, is at the end of the parking lot.
Where are the remote athletic fields located?

Valle Crucis Park: The park is located behind the Original Mast General Store on Broadstone Rd. in Sugar Grove. There are several fields that are through public use. Mountaineer Ruritan: Take 421 North to 321 North toward Elizbethton. The Fire Department is .9 mile after turning left onto 321 and the field is behind the Fire Department. Carroll Leather Goods Field: Take HWY 421 1.9 miles to Carroll Leather Goods (on right). The field is just beyond the company building. Coleman Field: Take HWY 105 4.4 miles. The field is on the left, directly off of HWY 105. Right after the speed changes from 45 to 35. Brendles Field: On Winkler's Creek Rd. Right behind the mall.
How do you get to Green Valley Outdoor Pool?

The outdoor pool is located at Green Valley Elementary School. You take HWY 194 for 5.1 miles. You will turn right onto Bill Gill Rd. and take the second left to the athletic facilities.
Officials
How do I sign up to be an official?

One would need to come by the office and fill out a job application form and specify what kind of job is wanted. There are several official clinics offered throughout the year.
Pool
Is your pool heated? What is the temperature?

Yes and the temperature is 78 degrees.
Pool Hours and Session Times
When is your pool open and what are the times for each session?

The pool has different times for each day that it is open. Aquacise is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00am to 11:00 am. The cost is $3 per class. Senior Exercise is Monday and Friday 11:00am to 11:45 am. Adult Lap is Monday through Saturday 12:00pm-4:00pm; Tuesday and Thursday 6:00pm-8:00pm. The cost is $2 per class. Public Swim is Monday-Friday 2:00pm-3:30pm; Saturday 12:00pm-4:00pm; Tuesday and Thursday 6:00pm-8:00pm. Watauga High School Swim Team practices from 3:30pm-6:00pm Monday-Friday; Saturday from 11:00am-12:00pm. The Spring Swim lessons will start at 6:00pm and run for an hour. The first session of lessons begins March 19-30; The second session is from April 2-13; The third is from April 23-May 4. The pool will begin registration on Thursday, Febuary 15th at 8:00am and continue until classes are full. Each session of lessons will cost a fee of $30 per child due at the time of registration.
Program Registration
How do you register for a program?

The Recreation Department has registration forms at the office and at the Boone Mall. Whether someone pays by cash or check, we take the completed applications at the office Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Most of our programs have limited space and we encourage you to come by early and sign up for the multiple programs that we offer.
Public Reserve Facilities and Equipment
How does the public reserve facilities and recreational equipment?

Reservations of designated Parks and Recreation Facilities are avaiable to the public from 7:00am-11:00pm.All facilities and equipment rental must be reserved by coming by the recreation center/swimming complex and filling out a reservation application. This entitles the user(s) to the shelters/fields during the times in which he/she have rented.NO ONE HAS EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO THE PARKS DURING THEIR RESERVATION TIME, ONLY TO THE SHELTER AND/OR FIELDS. THE PARKS ARE ALWAYS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!The fees vary depending on what is being reserved Picnic Shelters - $5/hr. Field Rental - $10/hr. or $20/half day Equipment - $5 per day

Special Olympics
How can I help with Special Olympics?

Keron Poteat at the Recreation Department is the local coordinator for Special Olympics in Watauga County. Contact her to volunteer and assist in the many wonderful programs that are offered year-round for the special populations. During Special Olympics coaches are needed. The coaches must have strong commitment to working and training athletes in various sports including tennis, track and field, basketball, aquatics, roller skating, volleyball, gymnastics, softball, bocce, soccer, equestrian and cycling. Fundraising is always needed to provide funds to local Special Olympics. Events include bake sales, car washing, tournaments, etc. Administrative/Data Processing skills are wanted to enter forms of participates and coaches into the database. Marketing/Development is needed to create awareness of Special Olympics through press releases, civic appearances, developing brochures, video (BIG NEED), and promotions. Trainers who will assist in administrating weekly fitness programs for Special Olympians. Alpine Games are the Winter Special Olympics held at Appalachian Ski Mountain (January and Febuary). Need onfront volunteers to help with lower level athletes during game competitions, awards presentation, hospitality, etc. The Spring Games are at the high school and would need people to help run the sports.

What do you offer for special populations?

Special Olympics, Very Special Arts Festival, Friday Night Live, hourly and daily art workshops.
Sponsoring
How can I sponsor an event?

All of the athletic registration forms have spaces allotted just for people who would like to sponsor a teams. Also call the office and find out other sponsorships that are available at a particular time.
Swim Lessons
When do you offer swim lessons and how do you register?

The Swim Complex offers lessons in the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons. The registration forms are at the Swim Complex and the Recreation Department, but registration is accepted at the Swim Complex.
Volunteering
How can I volunteer?

We have many volunteer opportunities. Call Stephen Poulos or Keron Poteat for additional information. 828-264-9511 We always need coaches for the athletic programs, groundskeepers, Special Olympics helpers for coaching, fundraising, administrative/data processing, marketing/development, trainers, Alpine Games, Spring Games, Friday Night Live.
