Youth Soccer

     Watauga County Parks and Recreation offers youth soccer to children ages 5 – 15 (age determined as of August 31, 2010). Six levels of play are offered based on age: U-6, U-8, U-10, U-12, U-15. Whenever possible, teams are formed by geographical location (except for U-15). Separate boys and girls leagues are created when sufficient numbers exist in any age group. If numbers do not allow for separate leagues, the leagues will be co-ed. Teams meet an average of 3 times per week, including 2 games each week. All participants are required to wear shin guards and team colored soccer socks. The recreation department will provide each child with a team jersey which is his/hers to keep at the end of the season. Soccer cleats are not required but are highly recommended. The registration fee is $33 per participant and must be submitted with the registration application. All participants must be registered with Watauga County Parks and Recreation no later then 5:00 pm on Friday, August 13, 2010.

Mighty Mountaineer Football

     Mighty Mountaineer Youth Football is offered to 3rd & 4th grade and 5th & 6th grade students in Watauga County. Two divisions are offered based on school grade. Mountaineer Youth Football is full contact football with fundamentals and proper techniques emphasized to help insure a safe playing environment. The Parks and Recreation department provides shoulder pads, helmet and a reversible Appalachian State University game jersey to each player for the season. Participants keep their game jersey at the end of the season. Each participant must provide his/her own practice jersey, shoes, socks, football pants, pants pads, and mouthpiece. The program runs for approximately 8 – 10 weeks. Teams meet an average of 4 times each week for games and/or practices. Games start as scrimmages at the beginning of the season and progress to full-contact regulation games. Teams may play Wilkes, Ashe, and Avery County teams. Some games will be played at ASU Football Stadium and the new WHS turf football field. The registration fee is $65 per player. All participants must be registered with Watauga County Parks and Recreation by 5:00pm on Friday, August 6, 2010.

Major 1 Baseball

     Major I Baseball is for children ages 11 and 12 (age as of 4/30/09). In this league, the fundamentals of baseball are continued to be developed. The season runs approximately 3 months. Teams meet 4 times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all participants. At the end of the season, all-star teams are formed. The registration fee is $55. All participants must be registered by 5:00pm on Friday, March 5, 2010.

Jr. League Baseball

     Junior League Baseball is for children ages 13-15 (age as of 4/30/10). In this league, the fundamentals of baseball are continued to be developed. The season runs approximately 3 months. Teams meet 4 times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all participants. The registration fee is $55. All participants must be registered by 5:00pm on Friday, March 5, 2010.

Girls Coach Pitch Softball

Girls Coach Pitch Softball is designed to teach girls ages 6 - 8 the fundamentals of fast pitch softball. Age is determined as of 12/31/09. Teams are formed by geographic location. Girls play approximately 10 games during the season and meet approximately 4 times per week for games, practices, and/or clinics. Softball clinics are held by ASU & WHS girls fast pitch softball teams for participants in this program. Games will be played on Saturday mornings and one weekday evening beginning at 5:30pm. The season will run from early April through June. Each player is required to have a glove, athletic shoes, and white softball game pants. Ten players play in the field and all participants are in the batting line up. The coach pitches to his team. No score is kept. The registration fee is $33 per participant. All participants must be registered with Watauga County Parks and Recreation by 5:00pm on Friday, March 19, 2010.

Girls Fast Pitch Softball

     Girls’ Little League Fast Pitch Softball is designed to teach girls age 9 - 12 the fundamentals of fast pitch softball. Age is determined as of 12/31/09. Girls play approximately 12 games during the season. Teams meet approximately 4 times per week for games, practices, and/or clinics. Softball clinics are held by ASU & WHS girls fast pitch softball teams for participants in this program. Games will be played on Saturday mornings and weekday evenings beginning at 5:30pm. The season will run from early April through June. At the end of the season, All Star Teams are formed. Each player is required to have a glove, athletic shoes, and white softball game pants. Placement drills are required for all participants in this league. The registration fee is $50 per participant. All participants must be registered with Watauga County Parks and Recreation no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, March 5, 2010.

Jr. Tennis Team

June - July 30, 2010


     The Junior Tennis program is for children ages 7 – 15. Four levels of lessons are offered: true beginner (1st year player), beginner (2nd/3rd year player), intermediate, and advanced. The beginners start with learning and then mastering the basics of tennis. The intermediate and advanced players are taught stokes and strategies. This program allows children to advance at their own pace. Junior Tennis begins the week of June 1st or the day after school is out. Practices will be held at the Recreation Complex tennis courts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through July 30. In addition to lessons and practices, tennis matches for advanced players are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the season. Registration is being accepted now and will continue to be accepted throughout the Junior Tennis Team Season. The registration fee is $80 per child.

T-Ball (ages 5 - 6)

T-Ball is the first level of co-ed baseball/softball for children ages 5 and 6 (age as of 4/30/10). The T-Ball program is designed to teach children the fundamentals of baseball/softball including as throwing, catching, and batting. This program also emphasizes teamwork and sportsmanship. Teams meet 3 times per week for practices and games. T-ball games consist of 3 innings in which every child gets to bat and plays in the field. No score is kept. A reduced-risk factor ball is used. Teams are formed by geographical location. The season runs approximately 8 – 10 weeks (mid-April through June). The registration fee is $33 per participant. All participants must be registered by 5:00pm on Friday, March 19, 2010.

Coach Pitch Baseball (ages 7-8

     Coach Pitch Baseball is a co-ed league for children ages 7 and 8 (as of 4/30/2010). The basics and fundamentals of baseball are taught. A reduced-risk factor ball is used. The season runs approximately 8 – 10 weeks. Teams meet 3 times per week for practices and games. During the game, all players are in the batting order and 10 players play in the field. No score is kept. Teams are formed by geographical location. The registration fee is $33 per participant. All participants must be registered by 5:00pm on Friday, March 19, 2010.

Major 2 Baseball

Major 2 Baseball is for children ages 9-10(age as of 4/30/10). This is the first level of kid pitch. In this league, the fundamentals of baseball are developed. The season runs approximately 3 months. Teams meet 4 times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all players in this league. At the end of the season, all-star teams are formed. The registration fee is $55 per participant. All participants must be registered by 5:00pm on Friday, March 19, 2010.
