New River Behavioral HealthCare has provided behavioral healthcare services (mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse services) for more than 35 years to the citizens of Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Watauga and Wilkes Counties.

New River's Area Board is comprised of 20 members, appointed by the Boards of County Commissioners in the five counties. The Area Board assesses behavioral healthcare needs in the communities, is the funding authority (to receive funds), and sets policy for the implementation of the behavioral healthcare program. The Area Director of New River Behavioral HealthCare works closely with the county and unit directors to administer the program and to assure that individuals receive the affordable full range of services offered by the agency. Approximately 150 clinically trained professionals in the five-county New River Area offer a full range of services including, but not limited to:

  • Assessment and Referral
  • Mental Health Services (for all ages)
  • Substance Abuse Services (for all ages)
  • Developmental Disabilities (for all ages)
  • 24-Hour Crisis Services
  • Consultation/Education/Prevention Services
  • Case Management
  • Respite and Other Specialized Services
  • Senior Companion Program
  • Foster Grandparents Program

Fees are reimbursable by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans. A sliding fee scale based on income is available, and financial counselors work with clients to find payment methods that best meet their needs. Confidential services are provided by caring professionals who are committed to the highest ethical standards.
