Voting Information
- have been a county resident for 30 days by the date of the election,
- be registered in Watauga County.
At the Voting Place
Upon entering the voting place, give your name, address and party (primary election only) to the precinct election officials. If you are properly registered, you will be asked to sign the registration list and you will be given the appropriate ballot.Transfer Voting
If you have moved within Watauga County more than 30 days prior to an election and failed to notify the Board of Elections, it is a violation of the law to return to your old precinct and vote. There are procedures that will allow you to vote. Call the Board of Elections office for futher information.Curbside Voting
If you are unable to enter the voting place because of age or physical disability, you will be allowed to vote either in your vehicle or immediately outside the voting place. Have someone enter the voting place and inform the precinct election officials of your desire to vote in this manner.|
All voting places in Watauga County are open from 6:30am until 7:30pm on every election day.

Absentee Ballots
If you are registered in Watauga County, you may request an absentee ballot by mail from the Board of Elections if:- you expect to be out of Watauga County during voting hours,
- you are ill of physically disabled and cannot enter the voting place,
- you are observing a religious holiday pursuant to the tenets of your religion.
The VOTER or the voter's NEAR RELATIVE* must send a signed written request to the Watauga County Board of Elections office beginning 50 days prior to election day. Written requests must be received in the office no later than the Tuesday prior to election day. Ballots will be mailed within one to two days after receipt of the written request. The voted ballot must be received in the Board of Elections office by 5:00pm on the day before the election to be counted.
*A NEAR RELATIVE, as defined by law, is a spouse, brother, sister, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, stepparent, stepchild, or verifiable legal guardian. Power of attorney is not acceptable as a near relative.
Each request must be signed by the voter or the voter's near relative and must include the voter's name, Watauga County residence address, date of birth, address where the ballot is to be mailed and the reason for the request. The near relative must also provide his/her name, residence address and relationship.
One-Stop No Excuse Voting - General Election
The One-Stop voting process permits voting at the Board of Elections office or designated satellite locations. One-Stop No Excuse voting begins on the first business day after the registration deadline, and ends at 5:00pm on the Friday before the election.
