Voter Registration
You may register to vote in Watauga County if you are:
- a citizen of the United States,
- a person 18 years of age or older,
- a person 17 years of age who will be 18 by the date of the general election,
- a legal resident of Watauga County.
Watauga County has a permanent registration system. You need to register only if you:
- have not previously registered in Watauga County,
- have had your Watauga County registration cancelled because you registered in another county or state,
- have had your voter registration cancelled because you were convicted of a felony and your citizenship rights have now been restored.
A voter registration card will be mailed to you once your registration form has been processed. Keep the card. It tells you the location of your voting place and the districts in which you reside.

Updating your Watauga County Registration
You need to update your registration if you:
- have moved within Watauga County since you registered,
- have changed your name,
- wish to change your party affiliation.
You may use your voter card or the form on the back of our Voter Guide brochure to update your registration information.

Party Affiliation
You may register with any political party recognized in the State of North Carolina. Party affiliation determines the primary in which a voter is eligible to vote. You may also register unaffiliated. If you do not declare a party, you will be registered as unaffiliated. During a partisan primary election, an unaffiliated voter may vote only if a party authorizes unaffiliated voteres to vote in their primary. If all parties authoreize unaffiliated voters, the voter must choose which party ballet he wishes to vote.
Registration Deadline
- If mailed, the registration form must be postmarked at least 25 days prior to the election.
- If hand-delivered, the registration form must be received at the Board of Elections office no later than 5:00pm on the 25th day prior to the election.
