Watauga County Boards and Commissions
Not Appointed By the Board of Commissioners

Appalachian District Health Department Board -
- The local Board of Health protects and promotes public health and has the authority to adopt rules to that effect. They can impose a fee for services rendered at the Health Department.
(1st Tuesday of every other month at 6:30 PM usually at a to be determined restaurant in Ashe County)

Blue Ridge Resource Conservation and Development Area -
- Non Profit Corporation that covers the same counties as Region D and are involved in projects that are related to community development and natural resource protection.
(4th Thursday in January, March, June and September)

Board of Elections -
- Registers voters, holds elections and interprets election laws for Watauga County.
(1st Tuesday of each month at 9 AM in the Board of Elections Office; $10/hr)

Committee of 100 -
- A non-profit corporation formed for the purpose of further developing economic development in the County.
(Annual Meeting in March)

Fire Commission -
- Provides for the organization, equpment, maintenance and government of fire companies and fire departments, employs a Fire Marshal, and adopts fire prevention codes.
(4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the various fire departments. Consists of Fire Chief or his designee)

Industrial Facilities and Pollution Control Financing Authority -
- Responsible for screening applicants for industrial revenue bond financing.

New River Behavioral Healthcare Area Authority Board -
- This Board governs the Area authority within the public system of mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse services. Board members are selected by the County Commissioners for each of five counties (Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Watauga and Wilkes) for their respective counties. Attention to membership guidelines for representation of population served is mandated.
(Meets usually the fourth Thursday evening at 7 PM - meetings rotate among the five counties covered by New River Behavioral HealthCare)

Watauga County Local Emergency Planning Committee (Hazardous Materials and Emergency Planning Committee) -
- Required by Federal law to plan how to respond to hazardous material accidents, etc.
(No set place - meetings held on the 4th Tuesday of every other month)

Watauga Opportunities, Inc. -
- Provides jobs and training for handicapped individuals.
(Meets every other month)
