Downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader is used to view .pdf files.

This page of Instructions applies to Windows 95, 98, and Windows NT Workstation PCs.

You are welcome to print this page if you need to.

Instructions for downloading

  1. Click on the Acrobat button above, which will open the Adobe Acrobat download page in a separate window for you. You will need to fill out information such as your operating system (Windows or MacOS, etc.). Once you've filled out that information, click on the "download" button.

  2. After you have completed step one, you should get this screen asking you what you want to do with the file you are about to download:

Make sure "Save this program to disk" is checked (as shown above) and click on the "OK" button.

  3. Now you will get a screen that is asking you to choose where you want to save the file:

Click on the down arrow next to the drop-down menu at the top of this screen and select "Desktop" (this should be at the very top of the list, so you may need to scroll up). Now click on the "Save" button.

  4. Now you should see the file being downloaded in a screen that looks like this:

Depending on the speed of your internet connection, this may take a few minutes. If the box doesn't disappear automatically once it is finished downloading, click on the "Close" button.

  5. Go to the desktop on your computer by either manually minimizing all open windows or by clicking on the "Show Desktop" icon in your Quick Launch Menu in the bottom left of the screen just to the right of the Start button.

To manually minimize a window: To "Show Desktop":

When you get to your desktop, find the Adobe Acrobat executable file. The icon looks like this:

  6. It is recommended to close all other windows that are open before you install this file. Double click on the icon. Now you will temporarily get an unpacking window that looks like this:

Once the file is finished "unpacking," the setup application will automatically open. When the first two windows pop up, click "Next" for both.

Click "OK" when the dialog comes up to thank you for choosing Adobe Acrobat. Now the installation is complete. There should be a new icon on your desktop that looks like this:

You don't have to open this software. When you click on a link on the internet that leads to a .pdf file, the file will now open automatically in your web browser.

Now that you have the software installed, you can go back to your desktop and delete the executable file since you no longer need it.
